AKRONThreat allegedAKRON: A federal grand jury has indicted an Akron man on accusations that he mailed a threatening letter to a Florida judge.Brian Horton, 46, is charged in U.S. District Court in Youngstown. He is accused of sending the letter to Judge T. Michael Johnson of the state’s 5th Judicial Circuit Court based in Tavares, Fla.According to an FBI affidavit, Horton admitted writing the letter in June in apparent frustration over his perception that the court mishandled his late mother’s estate. Horton was upset, according to the affidavit, about a $4,393 estate proceeds check that he said he had never received.“Maybe this will get a criminal hearing if I take the law into my hands,” Horton wrote in part of the letter. He told FBI agents he had no intention of following through on the perceived threats.The case was assigned to Magistrate Judge George J. Limbert.cuyahoga fallsPolice charge teenCUYAHOGA FALLS: Cuyahoga Falls police arrested a 16-year-old boy accused of using a gun to rob two children of a backpack last month.A second suspect is being pursued by police. The 16-year-old Akron boy surrendered to Falls police Thursday.According to police, the teen and an accomplice confronted a 13-year-old child and a friend at gunpoint on Aug. 19 at Riverfront Parkway near Broad Boulevard.The victims were ordered to empty their pockets and surrender a backpack. Kruger of Chagrin Falls was driving his BMW sedan south about 12:30 p.m. when he collided with a northbound Dodge Dakota pickup truck that crossed into the oncoming lane, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.Kruger was taken to Ravenna’s Robinson Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:37 p.m.The driver of the pickup, Harold W. Nicholson, director of the university’s Office of Multicultural Development, in response to a recent rash of robberies near campus, according to Laura Massie, the university’s director of media relations.In the email, Nicholson pointed out that while “most of these crimes have not been committed by University of Akron students, the primary suspects have been African-American males between the ages of 18-23.”The email advised the students “in the event you are stopped by the police,” to cooperate and “identify yourself as a UA student” and to carry a student identification card “with you at all times.”Nicholson also warned students to avoid profanity “even if you are angered” and not to run from the police.Massie said she was surprised by a TV news report Friday that some black students objected to being singled out.“The email was part of a larger proactive effort to communicate to all of our students,” she said. “Two years ago, we did something similar based on the recommendation of our African-American students.“We’re looking out for their safety.”WAYNE COUNTYPassenger killedNEW PITTSBURG: A 54-year-old Fredericksburg woman was killed and seven other people were injured in a two-vehicle crash in New Pittsburg in western Wayne County shortly before 9 a.m. Friday.Mary J. Yoder died after being transported to Ashland Samaritan Hospital.Yoder was in a van driven by Gary D. Boulet, 71, of Dalton, that included six other occupants. As Boulet was westbound on U.S. 30 at Elyria Road, the van was struck by a flatbed truck driven north by Thomas E. Ames, 73, of Holmesville.The van occupants have not been identified, but the Highway Patrol said they were from various Wayne County addresses and included one child.A doctor from Wooster drove to the scene and two medical helicopters landed in the westbound lanes of U.S. 30 to transport two of the victims.U.S. 30 was closed for more than an hour.
